About Me

My interest in motion design began when I played Age of Empires in 1999, and I loved everything about the design, animation, lighting, and shadows. While I've spent most of my career doing web design and some video projects, I've spent the last 8 years focusing on tools such as Cinema 4D to further enhance my skills in motion graphics.

Additionally, I am drawn to textures, gradients, clean design, shapes, and great typography, and look forward to creating inspirational artwork every day.

I believe my diverse set of skills enables me to tell unique visual stories in any style. That's why I'm a very good motion graphics generalist!

In my spare time, I like to play soccer, drums, guitar, and spend time with my wife and two girls. I think great ideas come while you're in the shower :)

WERX - Explainer Video

My involvement with WERX started with an email from a co-worker from a previous company who is a part of that company which led to a video chat meeting with a two other members shortly after. I gathered the client's ideal feel/style and quickly set expectations based on the timeline and budget allocated.

I started brainstorming and communicated my idea based on that chat but later learned there was a script and a basic idea that needed my feedback to get it to become the best it can be. I managed to use AI voice overs to record the script and provided a styleframe based on some images the client sent earlier as a moodboard. This was the actual start of the project where the client can see something that would resemble the final product after I had done some basic storyboards to get the idea across.

The client approved the styleframe with some feedback which went well and I agreed on their suggestions since they knew what they wanted to communicate better and understood their product more than I did.

I started gathering other materials such as the sound track and other SFX, as well as illustrations that I modified to fit my need for this project.

The client did enjoy the first part of the animation after I sent a test render since they got to see the character animation and could now imagine how the rest of the video would work in terms of that part of the video.

Rationale

The style of the animation was clean and without textures to further push the idea of cleanliness and clarity being that this is part of health care which needs to have these ideas embedded in people's mind. The colors I used for this video derived from their website and a PDF that was sent to me by the client so I wanted to make sure I stayed within their color guide and design system. I also took notes that they didn't want characters to have these overlay large hand/legs and to look more realistic proportionally.

I also suggested some ideas such as a call to action (url) at the end of the video so the viewer has something they can follow-up with that is of benefit to the company. I finally added a nice trendy background animation with their logo as a texture and a semi-transparent glass-like overlay with a message on top to enhance the feeling of being fresh and new since this idea is just like that.

Challenges

Initially, all three people from WERX seemed to be on the same page in terms of ideas but then started to have a few changes in mind and that wasn't exactly how everyone imagined things to be. My job at this point was to either wait for things to clear up or be proactive and try to get everyone to decide on the same thing so we are not spending too much time making unnecessary changes. I ended up communicating my thoughts to everyone and after sometime, we were back on track.

The changes meant that instead of the initial video being 1:30, it was now nearly 2:10 because the script was longer and that was needed to be able to tell viewers the proper information about WERX. This meant I had to spend extra time finessing the clips by speeding up parts, removing a few others while making sure the flow was still smooth.

Results

The client had a few revisions and made minor changes in a few batches but the final product was delivered via Dropbox (as were all tests and other materials) and was now very happy with the final video that clearly communicated the message of what the service was to both investors and practitioners so this could now be used in many aspects to clearly tell the viewer about WERX.

DALMORA - Ident

This project started in 2014 and actually ended around 2016 but only becuase it took a very long time to get the Go Ahead to render. I was tasked to create a brand for a new film company and later had the pleasure to also animate an ident for it.

Just like most projects, I started sketching some idea on paper for the logo and after some back and forth, the client agreed on a concept that I then took into Illustrator and made the final version which is the one shown here.

I was also tasked with creating the website for Dalmora and that was needed ASAP (as with everything that's needed yesterday always). I used a WordPress theme for the website and gathered some of the content and materials the client sent me and put together the site in a couple of weeks.

After building the site, the client shifted gears into movie productions and it was a bit later, that they decided to have an actual ident/bumper since they were only using the logo as is. This was sent to me to do and I couldn't be happier. It was the first time I had done something in 4K and also of this magnitude.

I quickly started figuring out what I needed to do in terms of flow and how I wanted to go about animating and presenting this 10-15 second intro video. It was back to the drawing board as I made some storyboards and got some inspirations and figured out the style I wanted as I had total creative freedom with this project.

Rationale

I really wanted sound to drive some parts of the animation and wanted to experiment with the idea of a space related theme and a dark overall look (you'll notice even with this dark look, nothing is actually pure black) especially since the word Dalmora had no actual meaning. This is where I gathered some SFX and watched many videos to get an idea of what I wanted to achieve in Cinema 4D at first, then composite the final render in AfterEffects.

I liked playing around with the idea of a cube coming from a black hole type of explosion into space. Then it would be more cubes to finally form the sides of the film strip of the letter L. Then animate the rest of the words in s stylistic way so the title would come alive near the second half of the animation. The word Entertainment had to come in way that synced to sound somehow in my vision and I feel I've accomplished that in the final render which had a really nice glow (thanks to Video Copilot's Saber plugin. Awesome stuff from Andrew Kramer of course).

Challenges

I ran into problems with Cinema 4D when animating the splines as they kept flickering different parts of the text as the revealed it layer by layer and couldn't really figure out the reason. I even changed the spline types using Akima, Bezier, and B-Spline which I ended up using with issues still. Sometimes you discover bugs in these programs and have to adapt to get to the finish line. I managed to render a few different parts that didn't have these flickering issues till I got the final frame count (for each multi render pass with object buffers. Whfew a lot of rendering using team render and the cloud enabled Amazon machine rendering for all the CGI elements) and put them together later for compositing.

One other thing was the the volumetric lights I used had created more noise and artifacts then I had hoped but the client was ok with it and didn't need another render to fix this.

Results

The final video was delivered to the client for use in the movies and they were happy with the result which led to yet another project of the same caliber (another movie studio ident animation).

A big lesson from this project was that I learned how to setup and use team render for Cinema 4D as well as using an Amazon machine with AWS setup to also test the final render as the in-house PC was not powerful enough to render this on time and without issues.

I wanted to test out some motion design effects and presets with this piece espeically in the first few seconds and also see how I can edit audio to fit different parts of the animation. Timing was something I had fun adjusting on the second part with the circles of text especially as the go away to bring in the final title which contained a few other trendy effects.

I liked playing with different textures and grunge elements to have different parts stand out on it's own as a unique setting which is why it feels like it's three pieces in one collage. This clean & simple intro/outro bumper was done in Cinema 4D and AfterEffects.

FUI HUDs Experimentation

With this project I wanted to explore some methods in Cinema 4D and AfterEffects to bring out unique looking GUI HUD type effects. These are things I'd like to build on later on to see how I can use different camera angles, mix and match, and change attributes such as colors, lines thickness, and more to achieve something unique everytime as part of a workflow.

Even though some of these were all individual effort playing around with different ways I can animate and repeat elements, it's always combining multiple elements & the compositing that takes it to another level as seen on the first example espeically when using tools such as Trapcode or even the base effects for adding glow and having multiple layers at different depths. I did pull lots of inspiration from some C4D artists and tried to build on some of them while otheres were just me trying the effect itself to see how I can modify it in the future.

Not every project requires fancy animations or too much design. Sometime's less is more and with this project, I worked with the provided script to give emphasis to each part so the user understands what the service is without any extras. Basically, to the point.

I worked mostly inside Adobe Premiere Pro but also with After Effects for this project. I also used linked comps between AE and PR and also made some of the text elements into motion graphics templates to make sure I had an easier time updating the text, font, color, and size only in Premiere.

Rationale

As this ad needed to be easily understood by people, I didn't want to complicate things with too many animations or anything too fancy, instead I focused on the overall message, the voice over, and the brand. Throughout the video, I used colors from the logo to maintain a consistent tone and enhance the viewers' focus on the brand.

Challenges

I challenged myself to only use free stock footage for this project since the manager said we were on budget and "Let's see what we can do." This always means, I'll get an answer AFTER the project is done so, instead I went ahead and started looking in free stock websites such as Pexels for the footage I wanted to use that could work with the script and luckily, I found some great stuff. I only had a bit of color matching between shots and some color correction or color grading to put it all together.

Solutions

This video served a very important purpose since there was no clear message to let users know what reship was in a simple and fast way. I believe this video solves that and minimizes any confusion.

A few things that some people may not notice are things like the fake sun flare from Video Copilot's Optical flares in one of the shots and that slight parallax in the vector animation. Also, how the cuts are driven by the beat/bpm of the audio. Video editing is best when it's not complicated!
